Wadsworth Grizzly pawThe spring sports teams at Wadsworth have had to battle with Mother Nature over the last few days. And Mother Nature is winning.

This past Friday and Saturday, nine sports events were cancelled involving Grizzlies teams. The last time the Wadsworth Baseball, Softball, Tennis and Track teams were able to compete was on Tuesday April 5.

How are teams able to keep their edge when they have played just a few games in the 2016 season when the weather turned?

Wadsworth baseball coach Greg Pickard admits this can be a challenging time of year. “We have no choice but to go back inside. We remind the players that they have to stay focused. Every team in Northeast Ohio is in the same boat as we are”.

But, Pickard says he tries to talk about the advantages of being inside to the players. “I tell them to work hard and concentrate on getting better every day. We work on hitting, bunting and fielding. I’ll admit it’s tough when you’ve just had a taste of playing outside”.

Senior infielder/pitcher Ross Thompson says “the coaches always drive home the point of getting better. We have the opportunity to do that by being inside. Since we can’t be outside playing games, we have to get better by being inside”.

Boys Varsity Tennis team coach Christa Halicki has her team working on conditioning when the weather forces them inside. “I know they want to be outside, but they’re good sports about it”.

While the Grizzlies wait to get back outside to compete, rest assured that when it happens, they’ll be ready to go.

The busiest man in Wadsworth Athletics is A.D. Brad Musgrave who is busy with rescheduling games at all levels; Freshman, JV and Varsity.
