The FDA is ordering drug-makers to put the strongest warning about risks on all fast-acting opioid painkillers.
On Tuesday, the agency announced that more than 200 drugs, including oxycodone and fentanyl, will need to carry a so-called “black box” warning which includes risks for abuse, addition, overdose, and death.
The order is the latest in a campaign to fight an epidemic of opiate addiction.
The FDA says black box warnings have been found to get doctors’ attention and influence their decisions on which drugs to prescribe.
