Owen Kovalik 2016Congratulations to Medina Christian Academy 7th grader Owen Kovalik! Owen won this weekend’s Regional Spelling Bee for the second straight year.

It took 29 rounds before Owen took the title Saturday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, by correctly spelling “sanguinary” and “podiatrist” back-to-back.

Parents said words given to the spellers Saturday were really hard. “They had Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Dutch and many other words derived from various languages.”

In May, Owen will head to D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place May 25-26. Last year, Owen finished 22nd at the national competition out of 285 competitors.

Medina students finished first, second and third at the 2016 regional bee.
