football 5Saturday Morning at 12:01am, the Wadsworth Grizzlies varsity football team lined up for first practice with pads on.

It was Midnight Madness, football style.

Practice for the varsity began on August First, but players were not allowed to tackle until six days later. Wadsworth head coach Justin Todd did not want any time to waste and had practice as soon as the calendar turned to August 6th.

There were a little over 100 fans in the stands to watch the Grizzlies begin practice with the ‘nutcracker drill’. The drill has players line up one-on-one to determine which player and put the other player on the ground.

The players and the coaching staff really got into it. For the next 45-to-50 minutes, the team, both offense and defense, went through a series of drills and plays.

Coach Todd likes the way practice went. “Anytime you can get under the lights and get that actuality of what a Friday night looks like is a good thing. You saw a lot of juice coming from our kids and that’s all I’m looking for. I’m making sure that our kids are flying to the ball and we’re working hard. I thought it was good”.

What was obvious to everyone in the stands, Wadsworth has some hitters on defense. “We’re very experienced defensively. We expect them to take the lead this year”.

As far as offense is concerned Coach Todd says it’s a work in progress. “We’re returning no starters on offense. But, I feel good where we’re at on offense after one week”.

Wadsworth has their first scrimmage this week, at Green on Friday Morning August 12th at 10 am.
