WCR Morning Show Host Matt Anthony interviews Grizzly Wrestlers heading to Columbus this weekend

The five members of the Wadsworth High School Wrestling team that are heading to Columbus to compete in the Division I State Wrestling Championships stopped by our studios Tuesday morning.

Noah Baughman (113), Connor Gray (120), Joey Baughman (145), Shane Mast (160) and Tim Knipl (170) along with their Coach John Gramuglia talked about their successes throughout the regular season and how much they are looking forward to this weekend.

“The State Tournament is very wrestler friendly,” said Coach Gramuglia. “In some tournaments you have to wrestle three or four times a day. In the first two days of the State Tournament, you have to wrestle only once.”

In his last season in high school competition, Gray, one of the three captains on the team, finally made to Columbus after a disappointing season last year when he lost in the sectionals. “I’m glad to get to states. Now I want to do something when I’m there.”

Despite the fact that Wadsworth has only five wrestlers competing at the State Tournament, the quintet believe they have a chance to win the team championship, which the Grizzlies did back in 2010. The Grizzlies are sending three district champions to the state in Noah Baughman, Joey Baughman and Shane Mast. Knipl finished second and Gray finished third in the Cleveland District meet.

The State Wrestling Tournament runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Ohio State.
