Be safe while celebrating this Halloween – Wadsworth Community Radio

Wadsworth Community Radio

scary-halloween-pumpkins-full-moonWhen celebrating Halloween this weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to remind motorists that designating a sober driver if you plan on drinking is one of the best ways to ensure you get home safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 43 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities on Halloween night from 2009 to 2013 involved a drunk driver. In that time period, 119 people lost their lives on Halloween night alone.

“The tragedies caused by drunk driving are preventable,” said Colonel Paul Pride, patrol superintendent. “If you want to stay safe and out of jail this Halloween, make a plan to get home if you’ve been drinking.”

Following these additional tips can help ensure that everyone enjoys their Halloween celebration:

  • Be responsible by not drinking and driving. Designate a sober driver before festivities begin, or plan to use a taxi or public transportation.
  • Always wear a safety belt.
  • Drink responsibly if you are 21 or older; do not drink if you are younger than 21.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, call #677 to report it. You might save a life.
