The FDA is moving to eliminate all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from U.S. foods — as part of the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.
The agency will phase out eight dyes: Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, Green No. 3, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1, and Blue No. 2—from the food supply by the end of next year and replace them with natural alternatives.
It’s also fast-tracking new dye approvals and urging companies to drop Red No. 3 ahead of schedule.
Officials say the move addresses growing health concerns—especially for children—and brings U.S. standards closer to those in Europe and Canada.
