The first major phase of construction is now underway for the new Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park, as crews officially begin mass excavation on what leaders are calling the largest construction project in Northeast Ohio.
Heavy equipment is now digging approximately 80 feet deep and will move nearly 2 million cubic yards of dirt as part of the early groundwork for the stadium and surrounding mixed-use development. The scale of the excavation alone makes it one of the most significant earthwork projects ever undertaken in Cuyahoga County.
“This is more than just a stadium,” said Dee and Jimmy Haslam, managing and principal partners of Haslam Sports Group. “By committing over $2 billion in private investment, we believe we will help create a transformative, world-class experience for our community and generate significant economic impact through construction, jobs, and future year-round events.”
The excavation work is being led by Independence Excavating, a Northeast Ohio-based company. President Rob DiGeronimo called the scope of the project substantial, especially given the site’s proximity to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
“Digging 80 feet deep and moving nearly 2 million cubic yards of dirt makes this one of the most significant earthwork projects in the county’s history,” DiGeronimo said. “We’re proud to be part of what will become the region’s largest economic driver.”
Construction partners AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction say the project will create thousands of jobs over the coming years. According to project leaders, at least 75 percent of total workforce hours will be performed by local residents.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the largest construction project in Ohio,” said Patrick Wipperman of AECOM Hunt and Taurean Spratt of Turner Construction in a joint statement. “Our goal is to create meaningful opportunities for local businesses and residents and ensure Northeast Ohio benefits directly from this investment.”
Brook Park Mayor Ed Orcutt called the excavation milestone a reflection of the city’s growing partnership with Haslam Sports Group.
“We are proud that Brook Park is home to the largest construction project in Northeast Ohio to date,” Orcutt said. “We can’t wait to welcome the visitors and economic activity that will come when this world-class stadium opens.”
The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for April 30. The new stadium and development are expected to open in 2029.
