Two local zoos are playing a role in new nationwide conservation efforts.
The Akron Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo are both part of projects funded through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction program.
The Akron Zoo is helping lead a $50,000 effort focused on tracking and protecting migratory songbirds across North America, while Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is part of a project working to protect endangered colobus monkeys in Africa.
In total, about $240,000 in grants are supporting five conservation projects around the world, all aimed at protecting vulnerable species and better understanding how to help them survive.
Local leaders say it’s another example of how Northeast Ohio zoos are contributing to global conservation work.
