The City of Wadsworth has reached a $750,000 settlement with the family of a man fatally shot by police in 2024, according to court records.
Shannon Sloan was shot in his backyard in June 2024 after his wife called 911 during what was described as a mental health crisis.
According to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Sloan was holding a firearm when officers arrived at the home on Durling Drive. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but investigators say he instead picked up the gun and pointed it toward an officer.
Two officers then opened fire, killing Sloan.
The lawsuit filed by Sloan’s family accused officers of using excessive force and failing to properly respond to a mental health situation. It also alleged the city lacked appropriate policies and training.
Attorneys for the family and city officials have not publicly commented on the settlement.
