Free blood pressure screening machines are now available at five Akron-Summit County Public Library locations.
The American Heart Association installed the new blood pressure hubs as part of its “Libraries with Heart” initiative, designed to make health screenings easier and more accessible throughout the community.
High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it may not cause noticeable symptoms before leading to serious health problems, including heart disease or stroke. Nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, and many may not realize it.
Each library hub includes a blood pressure monitor, instructions explaining how to take an accurate reading, information about what the numbers mean and a list of local medical providers for those who may need follow-up care.
The hubs are located at:
* Main Library
* North Hill Branch
* Northwest Akron Branch
* Odom Boulevard Branch
* Portage Lakes Branch
“Where you live shouldn’t determine how long you live,” said Gabbi Roszman, community impact director for the American Heart Association in Northeast Ohio. “These new hubs will give everyone in our community access to know their numbers and take control of their health.”
A normal blood pressure reading is considered to be below 120 over 80. Health officials say regular monitoring, lifestyle changes and medication when needed can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
