More than $35 million in federal funding is coming to Ohio to help veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes, including support for several organizations here in northeast Ohio.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the FY 2027 grants as part of a record $1.17 billion nationwide investment aimed at preventing homelessness, rapidly rehousing Veterans and providing transitional housing and supportive services.
In northeast Ohio, the VA’s Grant and Per Diem award list includes five Cleveland organizations and one in Lorain. The funding supports transitional housing and services designed to help veterans move toward stable, permanent housing.

Lorain Axess Family Services, Inc. Transitional housing and supportive services; 114 Veteran beds, plus capacity for 10 minor dependents
The Cleveland and Lorain awards are listed through the VA’s Grant and Per Diem program, which helps fund transitional housing and intensive supportive services for veterans experiencing homelessness.
Ohio also has several organizations receiving money through the separate Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, which focuses more on preventing homelessness before it happens and rapidly rehousing Veterans and their families. Those Ohio recipients include FrontLine Service, Axess Family Services, Community Action Agency of Columbiana County, Community Support Services and the Salvation Army, among others.
VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System officials say the goal is not only to get Veterans into housing, but to give them the support needed to stay there.
Acting Executive Director Katina Stone-Jones said the grants strengthen partnerships between the VA and community organizations and help provide Veterans with safe, stable housing and services that can make a lasting difference.
The VA says the funding comes after it housed more than 51,000 homeless veterans nationwide in Fiscal Year 2025, the highest number in seven years.
