The Celestia Theater is doing more than filling seats, it’s bringing people into Wadsworth and sending them into local restaurants, shops, hotels and gas stations along the way.

The Wadsworth Square Foundation says the historic theater welcomed about 36,000 ticketed guests during the first eight months of its current programming period, generating roughly $950,000 in ticket revenue.

What may stand out most is where those guests are coming from. About 69% of ticket buyers live outside Medina County, showing the theater is becoming a regional draw rather than simply a local entertainment venue.

Using a national arts economic-impact model, the Foundation estimates those first eight months of programming helped generate about $2.3 million in additional off-site economic activity in the Wadsworth area.

“The numbers demonstrate that the theater is much more than a place where people come to see a show,” said Wadsworth Square Foundation Executive Director Tom Weyand. “We are bringing thousands of people into Wadsworth from throughout the region and from other states.”

If the current pace continues, the Foundation projects the theater could welcome around 54,000 guests over a full year, generate about $1.4 million in ticket sales and contribute roughly $3.5 million in economic activity in the city.

The Celestia’s lineup includes concerts, arts events and children’s programming. Foundation leaders say they hope to continue growing the theater’s role as a destination while also tackling preservation and improvement projects at the historic building.

Weyand says there is still plenty of work ahead, but the early numbers offer encouraging evidence that the theater is helping put more eyes on Wadsworth.
