A ‘green-headed cone flower’ in Downtown Wadsworth.
It’s part of the 125th anniversary celebration of the founding of Akron Children’s Hospital. In all there will be 25 metal sculptures spread throughout the Summit, Stark and Medina County area to salute the community spirit and support Children’s Hospital has received since it began as a day nursery back in 1890.
The city of Wadsworth and the Downtown Wadsworth Organization have worked together in bringing of this one-of-a-kind sculpture to the city. It will be located at the convergence of High and Main and Broad and College Streets, close to the Time Warner storefront.
Sculpture Designer Judith Spater and Creator Stephen Canneto were in Wadsworth on Monday morning scoping out the location. They are expecting the ‘green-headed cone flower’ to be delivered to Downtown Wadsworth either late this week or the early part of next week.
So what is a ‘green-headed cone flower’?
“It’s a native Ohio prairie wildflower. The sculpture, made out of metal and stainless steel, will be green and bright yellow in color and will stand somewhere between 7 to 8-feet tall”, said Spater. “We decided on flowers and wildflowers to tie in with Children’s Hospital theme of ‘in your backyard’. We chose flowers that had a lot of visual appeal and structurally were not a nightmare to build”.
“We thought it would be neat to educate children about the wildflowers that are native to this area. We went through a number of wildflower books to get some ideas” said Spater.
