If you’re looking for a reason to head to the Akron Zoo this spring, here it is.
The zoo is introducing several new species as renovations wrap up in its Legends of the Wild area, with animals set to make their debut on May 16.
Among the new arrivals:
- White-faced saki monkeys, a small, tree-dwelling species from South America
- Sun conures, bright and vocal parrots that are also endangered
- Green aracari, colorful rainforest birds with distinctive long beaks
And it’s not just new faces, some fan favorites are making a return too.
Visitors will once again be able to see:
- Axolotls, the unique salamanders known for their ability to regenerate
- Cotton-top tamarins and golden lion tamarins, small monkeys known for their striking hair and endangered status
All of these animals will be housed in the zoo’s updated Primate Passage, which previously featured lemurs.
The updates are part of a broader refresh at the zoo. Earlier this year, the Akron Zoo also welcomed mountain lion cubs, chinchillas, and a new antelope species to other exhibits.
Zoo officials say the goal is to create a more engaging experience for visitors while continuing conservation efforts for endangered species.
