If you thought the Bowling Green State University Falcon Marching Band sounded big before, just wait until you hear them this fall.
BGSU says its Falcon Marching Band has grown to a record 600 members for the 2026-27 season, making it the largest collegiate marching band in the country, and, of course, the largest in university history.
And the growth has been pretty remarkable.
Just four years ago, in 2022, the band had only 90 members. This year alone, it added more than 120 students, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth.
“Reaching a record 600 members is an exciting milestone, but what makes it truly special is what it represents,” director of marching and athletic bands Jon Waters said. “The continued growth speaks to the incredible student experience at Bowling Green and the pride students have in being part of something with such a rich tradition.”
And don’t assume all 600 students are studying music.
More than 80 percent of the Falcon Marching Band’s members are non-music majors, with students from across the university choosing to make marching band part of their college experience.
As the band has gotten bigger, BGSU has also expanded its student leadership structure. Upperclassmen serve as section leaders, mentoring younger musicians and helping new members adjust to college life.
All those musicians need somewhere to practice, too.
In 2025, BGSU opened The Student Green, a new turf practice field funded with help from alumni donors and designed to give the growing band more room to rehearse.
The Falcon Marching Band is no stranger to performing on a big stage. During its 102nd year in 2025, it was one of just three college marching bands invited to perform in Dublin, Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
But an even bigger audience is waiting. The band has been selected to perform in the 2027 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day ahead of the Rose Bowl Game.
