Cleveland Clinic expands newborn screening for virus linked to hearing loss

Cleveland Clinic Children’s says a new newborn screening program is helping doctors catch congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) earlier, a common infection passed down from mothers to babies that can sometimes lead to hearing loss, developmental delays and other complications.

Researchers screened nearly 7,500 babies at Cleveland Clinic locations in Ohio between 2022 and 2025 and identified 34 cases. That increased detection by about two-and-a-half times.

The screening starts with a swab and, if needed, a urine test. Doctors say earlier detection gives families and care teams a better chance to monitor babies closely and begin treatment when appropriate.

Congenital CMV is not routinely tested for in every newborn nationwide. Cleveland Clinic researchers say their results show broader screening can be practical and effective.
