The ongoing legal battle over Glenville High School’s football playoff eligibility has taken another turn, and this time, the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s decision stands.
The Eighth District Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the OHSAA can enforce its October 29 decision removing Glenville from the state football playoffs.
As a result, Hunting Valley University School will advance to face Salem in Friday night’s Div. III regional quarterfinal.
The controversy stems from questions surrounding the eligibility of Glenville football players, many of whom attend other schools within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
The OHSAA previously revealed that 63 of Glenville’s 64 football players do not actually attend Glenville High School, and said the district had failed to provide sufficient residency documentation proving many were eligible to participate.
Two Glenville student-athletes challenged the association’s decision in court, leading to a series of rulings over whether the team could remain in the postseason.
Thursday’s appeals court decision allows the OHSAA to enforce its original sanctions.
“The OHSAA and our member schools are committed to the integrity and fairness of our tournaments,” said OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute.
The association says it will continue working with Cleveland Metropolitan School District on participation opportunities for students who attend schools other than the ones they represent in athletics.
