Kent State University’s College of Nursing is seeing its highest enrollment in a decade as the country continues to deal with a nursing shortage.
More than 1,600 undergraduate nursing students are enrolled on the Kent campus this fall. Nursing is now the university’s most popular major, and the incoming class includes about 400 full-time nursing students, the largest freshman nursing class since 2017.
Kent State has also expanded access to the program by allowing some students who have not completed every chemistry, biology or algebra prerequisite to enroll if they meet GPA requirements. The university then helps those students catch up on the required coursework.
A federal workforce report projects the U.S. could face a shortage of more than 267,000 full-time registered nurses by 2028.
