Today marks the start of Lent in the Christian tradition, a 40-day season leading up to Easter.
Lent begins today, on Ash Wednesday, and is observed by many Christians as a time of prayer, reflection, and often fasting or giving something up. The season mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness and is meant to be a period of spiritual reset and preparation before Easter.
For some, Lent means daily devotionals or church services. For others, it’s choosing to give up something meaningful, or adding in a new habit like gratitude, generosity, or quiet time.
And of course, in Northeast Ohio, Lent also means one beloved tradition: Friday night fish frys.
From church halls to VFWs and local fire departments, fish frys are under way across Medina, Summit, Stark, and Cuyahoga counties. Many local parishes and organizations have posted their schedules online, and several northeast Ohio news outlets have compiled running lists of fish fry locations and times.
Whether this season is about deep reflection for you, or simply gathering around a table with family and friends, we hope you find what you’re looking for this Lenten season.
