money genericA new list reveals which states are the most and least dependent on the federal government.

New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota and Kansas were the top five least dependent states.  Montana, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and New Mexico ranked as being the most dependent on the federal funds.

Ohio was the 10th least dependent state on WalletHub’s list.

Overall, the WalletHub study found so-called blue states, which tend to vote Democratic, are less dependent than red states, which traditionally favor Republicans.

WalletHub’s Jill Gonzalez says several key factors were used in comparing all 50 states, including return on taxes paid to the federal government, federal funding as a percentage of state revenue and more. You can read the study in its entirety at the link below.
