A major construction project in downtown Cleveland is officially under way, and it’s something drivers and event-goers will be dealing with for years.

ODOT has broken ground on the $328 million I-90 Central Interchange Project, which will rebuild aging roads and bridges dating back to the 1960s.

The project is expected to last through 2032, and along the way, drivers can expect lane restrictions, detours, and even full weekend closures on I-90.

That could have a noticeable impact on traffic heading into downtown, especially for big events like Browns games, Guardians games, concerts, and festivals.

Officials say the long-term goal is to improve safety, reduce congestion, and modernize one of the region’s busiest corridors.

But in the short term, they’re urging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time, and stay updated on closures as work continues over the next several years.
