Get ready for another busy construction season across northeast Ohio, especially in Summit and Cuyahoga counties. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is kicking off a record-setting year with nearly 1,000 projects statewide, totaling $3.4 billion in improvements.

And a big chunk of that work is happening in Cuyahoga County. Major work will be done along I-90, including:

  • A $328 million project between East 9th Street and Carnegie Avenue, replacing pavement and five bridges
  • Another $173 million project between Hilliard and West Boulevard, rebuilding the roadway through 2028

In Summit County, two major projects are already under way.

  • The $157 million replacement of the State Route 8 high-level bridge over the Cuyahoga River Valley, expected to wrap up in 2028
  • A $52 million widening project on I-77 between Ghent and Everett roads, expanding lanes and improving 12 bridges

Across northeast Ohio, there are 175 new projects this year totaling nearly $900 million, with more than 200 projects active overall when including ongoing work.

State leaders say the focus remains on maintaining existing roads and improving safety, something Ohio continues to invest heavily in.

With all that construction comes risk. Last year alone, Ohio saw more than 4,400 work zone crashes, including 21 deadly incidents. Officials say speeding and following too closely remain the top causes.
