In November 2024, the Medina County Health Department (MCHD) received concerns from residents about several cases of Hodgkin’s lymphoma among current and former students at Medina City Schools.

MCHD conducted an investigation, comparing the observed cases among 15–19 year olds to the expected number from 2014 to 2023. The numbers were found to be slightly elevated, but not significantly higher than what would typically be expected for that time period.

The department also gathered information through patient interviews. Initially, only two families participated, but with increased awareness in recent weeks, two additional families have come forward.

Mike Metcalf, Health Promotion Supervisor at MCHD, said while it is rare for cancer clusters to have a common environmental cause, the department will continue to collect information and monitor the situation.

Hodgkin lymphoma is common in younger adults, and often patients present to their doctors with asymptomatic lymph node swellings,” says Francine Foss, MD, a professor of medicine (medical oncology) at the Yale Cancer Center. “Tremendous progress has been made over the last 10 years in the treatment of Hodgkin lymphomas with novel drugs and immunotherapy and improved radiation techniques.”

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s immune system. It is also said to be highly treatable and in most instances, curable — impacting teens and young adults most frequently.

Parents or guardians who wish to discuss their child’s case of Hodgkin’s lymphoma are encouraged to contact the health department at 330-723-9688 and choose option 2 to speak with a public health nurse. To protect patient privacy, no information related to individual cases will be shared.
