Several zoos across Ohio, including Akron, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo, were evacuated over the weekend after receiving bomb threats that were later determined to be hoaxes.

Authorities say the incidents appear to be part of a broader, nationwide wave of so-called “swatting” calls, fake emergency threats designed to trigger large police responses.

In Akron, the zoo received a bomb and active shooter threat around 10:50 a.m. Sunday. Staff immediately evacuated all guests and employees as Akron Police conducted a full sweep of the grounds.

Officials say nothing suspicious was found, and the threat was determined to be false.

No injuries were reported, and all animals are safe.

The Akron Zoo closed for the remainder of the day out of an abundance of caution and plans to reopen today. Guests who had tickets for Sunday can contact the zoo about rescheduling or refunds.

Authorities continue to investigate the source of the threats.
