A new documentary is giving viewers a closer look at one of Akron’s most iconic traditions, the All-American Soap Box Derby.
The hour-long film, “More Than A Race,” goes behind the scenes of the 88th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby, focusing on the young racers, their families and the journey that brings competitors from around the world to Akron.
The documentary features interviews with a number of Soap Box Derby champions, sharing what the experience means from their perspective and what it takes to reach race day.
But the film goes beyond the competition itself. Organizers say it also highlights the lessons that come with the sport, including STEM education, perseverance, sportsmanship and teamwork.
At the heart of the documentary are the kids who dream of becoming champions — and the families who support them along the way.
Viewers will hear stories from racers from around the world, experience the emotion behind the competition and learn why, after nearly nine decades, the Soap Box Derby continues to inspire new generations of participants.
“More Than A Race” premieres Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Eastern.
The documentary will air on PBS Western Reserve and will also be available through the station’s YouTube channel and website.
