A North Royalton firefighter has died in the line of duty, and another remains hospitalized following a house fire in Broadview Heights Monday night.
Fire crews from multiple departments responded around 8 p.m. to a home in the 2100 block of West Royalton Road (Route 82), near Scottsdale Drive.
According to North Royalton Mayor Paul Marnecheck, two firefighters suffered extensive injuries while battling the blaze. One died, while the second remains in serious but stable condition.
Several police officers responding to the fire were also hospitalized after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation, according to WKYC.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen firefighter and his family, as well as our injured firefighter and his family,” Marnecheck said in a statement Tuesday. He also asked the community to respect the families’ privacy.
An escort honoring the fallen firefighter traveled from MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office Tuesday afternoon. The American flag was also lowered to half-staff outside the North Royalton Fire Department.
The identities of the firefighters have not been released. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
