Ohio lawmakers are considering legislation that would guarantee daily recess for younger students and expand physical education options for high schoolers.
House Bill 304 would require K-8 students in public, community and STEM schools to receive two 30-minute recess periods each school day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Ohio currently does not mandate daily recess.
The bill would also give high school students more flexibility in meeting physical education graduation requirements, allowing club sports and other organized athletic activities to count toward PE credits.
Supporters say the changes recognize the importance of physical activity for students’ health, focus and overall well-being. The bill is currently being reviewed by the Ohio House Education Committee.
