The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Memorial Day weekend traffic deaths in the state dropped to their lowest level in 18 years.
According to provisional data from OSHP, six people were killed in crashes statewide during the four-day holiday reporting period, which ran from May 22 through May 25.
Troopers say they made more than 16,000 traffic-related stops and contacts over the weekend. That included 355 OVI arrests, 66 drug arrests and more than 2,000 safety belt citations. The Patrol also reported more than 1,600 motorist assists.
Locally, Summit County was among the higher-reporting counties in the state, with about 650 reported incidents during the holiday period. Stark County reported just over 500.
The Memorial Day numbers come shortly after OSHP’s first-ever statewide impaired driving enforcement initiative, which included local law enforcement agencies and ODOT. That effort resulted in more than 18,000 vehicle checks and 158 impaired driving arrests.
