It’s a big day in Columbus. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center officially opens its new University Hospital today, moving more than 425 patients into the brand new 26-story facility.

The hospital has been a decade in the making and is the largest single construction project in Ohio State’s history, and the largest single-facility hospital to open in the U.S. in 2026.

The 1.9-million-square-foot building features 820 private patient rooms, each with large nine-foot windows for natural light and 75-inch digital screens that allow patients to access care information, telehealth, entertainment and room controls.

The hospital includes 24 operating rooms, 234 ICU beds, advanced neurovascular suites for stroke care, and 24/7 dining access for patients and families. It also adds nearly 400 beds to the medical center, expanding capacity as central Ohio’s population continues to grow.

Medical staff are using three dedicated routes to safely transition patients into the new space today.

With the opening also comes some campus changes, including updated building and road names around the medical center.

University leaders say the goal is simple: deliver cutting-edge care in a space designed around patients and their families, for Ohio and beyond.
