Traffic fatalities in Ohio have dropped for the fourth consecutive year, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, but officials say the numbers remain too high.

Last year, the state recorded 1,037 fatal crashes, a 3.7% decrease from the previous year. From 2021 through 2025, there were 5,688 fatal crashes statewide, resulting in 6,149 deaths.

Patrol data shows more than a quarter, 26%, of fatal crashes over the past five years happened when a vehicle drove off the roadway. Other leading causes include unsafe speed, driving left of center, failure to yield, following too closely, and running stop signs.

Governor Mike DeWine called roadway safety a shared responsibility, noting that while progress is encouraging, more work remains.

OSHP says many fatal crashes are preventable and encouraged drivers to slow down, maintain safe following distances, wear seatbelts, and never drive impaired.

State troopers say increased visibility and enforcement efforts will continue as part of the push to keep the downward trend moving in the right direction.
