breakfastDo you start your day off with a healthy breakfast? Or do you skip food for a cup of coffee instead? If you think not eating is saving you some calories and helping you lose weight, you might want to think again.

According to a new study published in the “Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry,” skipping meals can actually make you gain more belly fat. And it’s the kind of fat linked to lots of chronic health issues, like heart disease and diabetes.

Researchers from Ohio State University studied mice and found that they not only gained weight but also showed signs of insulin resistance, which means their livers forgot how to react to insulin signals telling it to stop making glucose.

So what’s the best way to keep your body working at it’s best?  Try eating smaller meals during the day to keep your blood sugar stable.  And when you don’t have time to eat breakfast, at least grab a banana or a healthy granola bar, just make sure it doesn’t have too much sugar.
