St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays known for parades, green shirts, Irish pride and get-togethers with family and friends. But along with the celebration comes a serious reminder from law enforcement: plan ahead before you drink.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says troopers will be highly visible on roads across the state as part of the national “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving” campaign, including in northeast Ohio.
Officials say impaired driving remains a major concern around St. Patrick’s Day. According to patrol statistics, Ohio has seen 16 fatal crashes on St. Patrick’s Day over the past five years, with more than half involving impaired drivers.
The patrol is urging anyone celebrating in Summit, Stark and surrounding counties to choose a sober driver, call a friend, or use a rideshare service instead of getting behind the wheel impaired.
Troopers say they will be watching not only for alcohol-related impairment, but also drivers under the influence of marijuana or other drugs.
The message from law enforcement is simple: enjoy the holiday, but make sure you have a safe ride home.
