The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about two scams resurfacing in the area that involve scammers impersonating law enforcement.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are calling residents about supposed legal matters and demanding money, while using the real names of sheriff’s office employees, and in some cases, staff names from other law enforcement agencies, to sound legitimate. Officials stress that the sheriff’s office will never call to demand payment for any legal issue.
A second scam involves callers contacting places of employment, claiming they are looking for a specific employee and asking that person to contact a supposed officer. One name being used in this scam is “Lt. Green,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities are urging the public not to send money, gift cards, money orders, or any form of payment, and not to share personal information with anyone claiming to be from law enforcement.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and report it.
