No real surprises in Tuesday’s Republican Primary Election in Wadsworth. Both incumbents that faced opposition won their races.
Council President Thomas Palecek defeated challenger Susan Hanlon by nearly a 2-to-1 margin. In Ward Two, Councilman Bob Titus squeezed by Rick Ott by six votes. In Ward One, there were two names on the Republican ballot. Incumbent Councilman Ralph Copley received 140 votes. Beth Workman’s name was on the ballot, but she withdrew her name from consideration last month.
All other candidates on the Wadsworth ballot were nominated without opposition. They include Mayor Robin Laubaugh (R), Law Director Norman Brague (R), Auditor Catherine Fix (R), Councilmen at-large Patricia Haskins (D), David Williams (R) and Bob Thurber (R). Also nominated were Ward 3’s John Sharkey (D) and Ward 4’s Bruce Darlington (R).
There were two issues on the local ballot yesterday. In Wadsworth Township, voters defeated a proposed 3-mill levy for fire and EMS Services by seven votes. In Wadsworth Ward 3 Precinct B, voters approved a measure to allow Sunday Liquor Sales at the American Legion Post #170. The vote was 28 in favor, 22 opposed.
The only countywide issue on the ballot, Issue 10, which would have increased property taxes eight-tenths of one-percent for social services was defeated by about a 58-percent to 42-percent margin: 5,615 no votes to 4,098 yes votes.
