It was a busy Monday night for the Wadsworth Fire Department and firefighters from neighboring communities.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, Wadsworth firefighters responded to a call to thick black smoke coming from the area near the intersection of State and Main. When fire crews arrived to the scene, they discovered a blaze in a 10,000 square foot outdoor storage area that was fenced in. It contained a rubberized material and styrofoam.
“When we arrived on the scene we had heavy flames showing and thick black smoke,” said assistant Wadsworth fire chief Robert Lindner. “We set up a defensive operation and put a lot of water on it.”
Wadsworth firefighters had to bring in a backhoe to move the styrofoam containers and the rubberized material out of the way in order to get to the smoke and flames.
Lindner says one firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury while battling the blaze. The firefighter was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
