March 26 is make up your own holiday day – Wadsworth Community Radio

Wadsworth Community Radio

Today – March 26 – is make up your own holiday day! After seeing a full year of creative and wacky holidays, you begin to think of your own. Although establishing an official national holiday is not easy, if you’re dedicated to your idea, the process is a fun challenge. How do you do it? We have a five step process below:

  1. Choose the right theme. Your holiday can be fun; for example dedicate this day as a National Goofing-Off day to celebrate the joys of life and the freedom to celebrate anything your heart desires. Or choose a holiday of a more somber feel for something that means a lot to you.
  2. Seek government approval. Approach your state representative to issue a legislative proclamation about your special day. If that doesn’t happen, try getting the mayor or council of your town or city to recognize the event in some fashion, creating credibility and publicity.
  3. Register with Chase’s: The official book of offbeat holidays is McGraw-Hill’s Chase’s Calendar of Events. Check out their website for an idea!
  4. Plan your festivities: Decide on how to celebrate your holiday: with an event or a publicity campaign. Create representation for the special day.
  5. Obtain some headlines: Publicize the meaning behind your holiday; what’s it about and why, if any events are planned, and reach out to people who might relate. Social media and personal websites or blogs are a great way to spread the word. Continue these steps annually as you build on your own tradition for your special day.
