One of the most decorated players of the Browns’ modern era is hanging up his cleats.
Veteran offensive guard Joel Bitonio announced his retirement Monday, ending a remarkable 12-year NFL career spent entirely in Cleveland.
Drafted by the Browns in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Nevada, Bitonio quickly became a cornerstone of the franchise. Over 12 seasons, he started 178 games, earned seven Pro Bowl selections, was named a First-Team All-Pro six times, and served as a team captain six times.
In a lengthy farewell message, Bitonio reflected on his career, his teammates, the organization and Browns fans.
“There was never a point where I could envision myself in a different uniform,” Bitonio wrote. “Wearing that orange helmet and being part of this franchise gave me a sense of pride.”
Bitonio said one of his favorite memories came during the Browns’ playoff-clinching victory over Pittsburgh following the 2020 season. After years of losing seasons, the moment reinforced his desire to finish his career in Cleveland.
He also took pride in his durability, starting 178 games and putting together a streak of 102 consecutive starts. During his career, he surpassed Hall of Famer Joe Thomas for the most starts by a Browns player since the franchise returned in 1999.
Bitonio thanked his wife, children, parents, teammates, coaches and the Browns organization for their support throughout his career. He also highlighted the importance of community involvement and the relationships he built through charitable work across Northeast Ohio.
Although he acknowledged the dream of winning a Super Bowl remained unfinished, Bitonio said his heart was always set on ending his career where it began.
“To the city of Cleveland, our loyal fanbase, the Haslam family and the entire Browns organization, thank you,” Bitonio wrote. “Thank you for 12 years of unwavering support and unforgettable memories.”
Bitonio retires as one of the most accomplished offensive linemen in Browns history and a player widely regarded as a model of consistency, toughness and leadership.
