People planning to kayak, canoe or recreate along the Cuyahoga River now have a new way to check conditions before entering the water.

Cuyahoga River Water Trail partners have launched the Cuyahoga River Conditions Tool, known as CUYAC (pronounced “kayak”). The online, map-based system provides near real-time information about river and weather conditions at public access points.

The tool uses data from the National Weather Service, the U.S. Geological Survey and participating local communities to assign a color-coded risk level to different sections of the river.

Teal means conditions are generally favorable, although users should still be cautious. Yellow signals a higher risk because of weather, water flow or temperature. Orange means conditions are hazardous and visitors are advised to stay out of the river and away from the bank.

The map also identifies rapids, low-flow areas, no-paddle zones and locations that are designated for takeout only.

Visitors can access CUYAC by scanning QR codes posted on new signs near river access points. The first signs have been installed at six locations, including Kinsman Road, White Oaks, the Tony Sainato Memorial Canoe Launch, Brust Park, Northampton Point River Access and the Valley View area of Cascade Valley Metro Park.

Officials say additional signs are expected to be added along the Cuyahoga River.

Water Trail partners stress that CUYAC does not replace personal judgment or experience. Conditions can change quickly, and anyone entering the river should wear a life jacket and understand the risks involved.
