A new Ohio law aims to make sure veterans who end up in jail don’t miss out on important services that could help them get back on their feet.

The law, which took effect September 23, requires correctional facilities to verify veteran status within three days of booking.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy says many veterans don’t disclose their military service, meaning they could miss out on VA healthcare, mental health treatment, substance abuse programs and other resources.

Once identified, veterans can be connected with specialized services designed to help with recovery and a successful return to their communities.

The effort is already gaining traction, with the number of registered county correctional facilities growing from 10 to 42.

Kennedy says identifying veterans early can make a meaningful difference in their rehabilitation and recovery.

The Ohio Supreme Court will also host a Veterans Summit Nov. 19 in Columbus, focused on helping veterans heal and successfully reenter their communities.
