There’s a pretty incredible medical first happening right here in Akron, and it sounds almost futuristic. Summa Health has become the first hospital in Ohio to perform a new, minimally invasive weight-loss procedure that uses magnets instead of traditional surgery.
Yes… magnets. So how does it work?
Instead of making incisions or using staples, doctors use a system that allows two tiny magnets to connect parts of the small intestine from the inside. Over a few weeks, the body naturally forms a new connection, no cutting required.
It means less pain, faster recovery and fewer risks tied to traditional surgery.
This isn’t just about weight loss, as it could be a big deal for people struggling with severe obesity or Type 2 diabetes.
The procedure helps the body naturally produce more GLP-1, the same hormone targeted by popular weight-loss medications, by changing how food moves through the digestive system.
Doctors say patients are already seeing meaningful results, including about 15% total body weight loss in early outcomes. And because the procedure is less invasive, some patients are able to go home the same day and get back to normal routines quickly.
