It was a successful sports weekend for the Grizzlies as Wadsworth registered wins in football and volleyball.
In football, the Grizzlies defeated Ashland 27-24, Junior quarterback Joey Baughman completed a 42-year touchdown pass to Michael Lallathin with just four seconds remaining in the game to give Wadsworth the victory in their first regular season game of the season.
Baughman set a school record for a quarterback by rushing the ball 30 times for 265 yards. He also completed 10 of 18 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.
Wadsworth had a 21-7 lead midway through the third quarter. But, Ashland scored the next 17 points, including a 21-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining to give Ashland a 24-21 lead. Following the kickoff, Baughman connected with Mitchell Blackburn for 23 yards to take the ball to the Ashland 37 yard line. The Grizzlies suffered a five-yard false start penalty setting up the last play.
Wadsworth, now 1-0 on the season, will play the Wooster Generals on the road Friday September 2nd at 7 pm.
Also on the weekend, the Wadsworth Volleyball team opened their season with a 3-0 victory over the Copley Indians. The scores were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18.
Sophomore Kacie Evans led the way for the Lady Grizzlies with 10 kills, 5 blocks and 7 digs.
