The Akron Zoo is mourning the loss of its beloved male lion, Tamarr, who passed away this week at 20 years old.

In recent days, Tamarr’s health took a sharp decline due to chronic kidney disease, and the zoo’s care team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him. Tamarr was the second-oldest male lion living in an accredited zoo, far exceeding the typical lion lifespan of about 17 years.

Born in Colorado in 2005, Tamarr came to the Akron Zoo in 2007, a young lion with just a mohawk. Over the years, he grew a majestic mane and became a true fan favorite, known for his loud roars and playful personality.

Zoo President and CEO Doug Piekarz said Tamarr captured the hearts of both staff and guests, calling him “a wonderful ambassador for lions and the Akron Zoo.”

The zoo’s other lions, Donovan, Kataba, and Msinga, will remain on exhibit daily. The zoo is also working with the African Lion Species Survival Plan on next steps for Tamarr’s longtime companion, Mandisa.

Tamarr will be deeply missed by everyone who loved him.
