Wadsworth Community Radio

flooded basement Wadsworth TownshipFlooding across northeast Ohio has caused serious damage to many homes, including some in Wadsworth Township. Residents who live in the Golden Ridge neighborhood are trying to deal with flooded basements, soaked yards and more. At least one family in the development has been forced to leave their home after water came pouring in through the concrete wall, trashing their basement.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through noon Tuesday, as the threat of damaging winds and storms looms. Here are some tips from Beacon Journal home writer Mary Beth Breckenridge on dealing with flooded basements:

• If water is on the floor, be concerned about dangers created by electrical cords.

• Water may have drowned pilot lights, resulting in a buildup of explosive natural gas.

• Call the utility companies to have the power and gas turned off, or contact a damage-restoration specialist to deal with the problem.

• Unplug appliances if they’re near the water.

• Call the insurance company. It’s better to ascertain upfront whether the damage is covered and whether the insurance company will pay a professional to do the work.

Hopefully, the sunshine will come back out mid-week to dry the saturated ground and provide some relief to homeowners who have had to deal with severe flooding.
