Macy'sMacy’s plans to close 36 stores, including one in northeast Ohio, and lay off about 4,350 employees nationwide in an effort to cut costs by about $400 million, the company announced on Wednesday.

Final clearance sales at the Macy’s inside Chapel Hill Mall will begin Monday, Jan. 11 for 8-12 weeks. The 169,000 square foot store inside the Akron mall first opened in 1967. Some 91 employees will be affected.

Macy’s said employees who work at the closing stores may be offered positions at nearby locations, and workers who are laid off will be offered severance benefits.

The Cincinnati-based company says it closes a few underperforming stores every year. The company runs 770 Macy’s stores and has closed 52 locations over the last five years while opening 12.
