New leadership in Wadsworth for public safety director, service director – Wadsworth Community Radio

Wadsworth Community Radio

Big changes are underway at City Hall.

Mayor Robin Laubaugh announced Tuesday (June 3) two major leadership appointments: Matt Hiscock is stepping into the role of Director of Public Service, and Police Chief Dan Chafin will take over as Director of Public Safety.

Matt Hiscock Takes on New Challenge
If you live in Wadsworth, you probably already know the name Matt Hiscock. Since 2008, he’s been serving as the Director of Public Safety—leading the city’s Police, Fire, EMS, and Dispatch departments with dedication and heart.

Now, beginning June 6, Hiscock will officially take on a new title: Director of Public Service.

“This will be the first time in three decades that I will not be directly or indirectly associated with the provision of safety services in some form,” Hiscock shared. “Safety force work has and will always be a passion for me.”

Hiscock has already been wearing two hats, recently serving as Interim Director of Public Service where Mayor Laubaugh praised his performance.

“As the Interim Director, Matt has demonstrated exceptional leadership in managing numerous city departments and overseeing significant projects, all while continuing to fulfill his responsibilities as Director of Public Safety.”

Now, with his full focus on public service, Hiscock says he’s ready to dive in.

“I’m truly appreciative of Mayor Laubaugh’s faith and trust in me. Preserving and providing for the systems, departments, and personnel that deliver essential services to our community are core functions of serving the public.”

His experience runs deep—he’s been an attorney for 28 years, a former FBI agent, a city prosecutor, and even a part-time firefighter in Wadsworth.

“Matt’s extensive background in public safety, legal affairs, and municipal operations uniquely positions him to succeed as Director of Public Service,” Laubaugh added. “His commitment and integrity make him an outstanding choice.”

Chief Dan Chafin Steps Up as Director of Public Safety
With Hiscock’s transition, Police Chief Dan Chafin is moving into the role of Director of Public Safety—and he’s no stranger to the Wadsworth community.

Chafin has served with the Wadsworth Police Department since 2010, working his way up from patrol officer to Chief of Police in 2021. He’s been recognized for his excellence, including being named “Officer of the Year” in 2014.

“Dan is an outstanding leader who has represented our police with dedication and professionalism. His integrity, responsiveness, and unwavering commitment to public safety make him exceptionally well-suited for this position,” Laubaugh said.

Chafin brings a thoughtful and collaborative leadership style.

“Although my primary responsibility has been with the police and dispatch departments, I’ve worked closely with Fire and EMS and I have tremendous respect for the work they do,” he said. “I’m honored to continue serving our community in this expanded capacity and remain committed to upholding the highest standards of public safety.”

He holds a degree from the University of Akron in Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics and is a graduate of the Ohio Law Enforcement Foundation’s Police Executive Leadership College.

“Dan is a quality individual: responsive, ethical, with a strong sense of duty,” Laubaugh said. “With his leadership and vision, I look forward to continuing our efforts to provide excellent safety services to our community.”
