A newly completed ODOT feasibility study looking at the busy I-71 and I-271 corridor in Medina County found that improving local roads may do far more to reduce congestion and improve safety than redesigning the interstate interchange itself.
The study focused on whether adding missing interstate-to-interstate connections between I-71 and I-271 would significantly improve traffic flow. After a detailed review, ODOT concluded that upgrades to nearby local intersections would provide greater benefits at a much lower cost.
Instead of major interchange reconstruction, ODOT is now recommending a series of roadway improvements along the Route 3 and Route 94 corridors.
Those proposed improvements include:
– New roundabouts
– Additional turn lanes
– Road widening projects
– Intersection safety upgrades
According to ODOT, the recommended changes would help ease delays, improve traffic movement and reduce crashes while also minimizing environmental impacts and the amount of additional property needed for construction.
The corridor has seen increasing traffic growth in recent years, particularly near Medina County’s rapidly developing commercial and residential areas. Concerns about congestion around the interstate connection have led to years of discussion about possible interchange expansion projects.
However, the study determined that the cost of creating new interstate ramp connections would outweigh the traffic benefits compared to targeted local roadway improvements.
ODOT says the recommendations are intended to improve both daily commuting and long-term traffic flow throughout the area.
