The Ohio EPA is seeking proposals for the next two rounds of H2Ohio Rivers Chloride Reduction Grants, offering $1.5 million in funding across 2026 and 2027 to help communities reduce road salt runoff.

The grants are open to eligible Ohio municipalities, townships, and counties located near high-quality streams or vulnerable groundwater sources. Funding supports equipment and facility upgrades aimed at reducing salt use, including calibrated spreaders, brine application systems, and improved salt storage.

Each selected project may receive up to $75,000 through reimbursement grants. Applications are competitive and must be submitted by Feb. 6.

State officials say interest remains strong. Since launching in 2023, the program has awarded $4.3 million to 85 Ohio communities, helping limit salt runoff that can contaminate drinking water and harm aquatic life.

The chloride reduction grants are part of H2Ohio, a statewide effort launched in 2019 to protect Ohio’s waterways through pollution reduction, infrastructure improvements, and conservation projects.
