Wadsworth Grizzly pawThe Wadsworth Varsity baseball team began the State Baseball Tournament with a win, thanks to a consistent pitching performance and a big hit from batter who was in a slump.

In a sectional final game in the Hudson District, Wadsworth defeated Copley 5-1 in a game played at the Grizzlies’ home field.

Wadsworth rode the right arm of senior Nick Bebout in getting the win. Bebout’s record is 8-0. He also hit a home run in the game, a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth inning. For Bebout, it was his fourth round tripper of the season.

“Our hitting was doing pretty good when we needed it” said Bebout. “It seemed that we always had runners in scoring positions and we executed well in those situations”.

Wadsworth got on the scoreboard in the second inning, thanks to an RBI double by senior third basemen Wil Rock. “That hit was huge” said Bebout. “He’s been in a slump recently, but he’s breaking out of it and it came at a perfect time”.

The count was 1-1 to Rock. He got a fast ball on the outside part of the plate and drove it into the right-center field alley. “It was a good feeling to be standing on second base after that hit” said Rock. “Throughout the season I hadn’t been hitting so well. I kind of came back just now, luckily in time to get that hit”.

The Grizzlies scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Wadsworth scored twice in the fourth. Copley got their only run in the top of the fifth.

Wadsworth completes the regular season at home on Friday against Tallmadge. It’s Senior Day for the
Grizzlies. First pitch will be at 4:30.

The next Tournament game will be Tuesday, May 19th at Hudson High school against Brecksville-Broadview Heights. First pitch will be at 7 pm.
