Wadsworth Grizzlies wrestling coach Clay Wenger has left the job. He announced last week he will be taking a full-time college offer, starting a women’s wrestling program at The University of Mount Union.

“It is a dream of mine to coach college wrestling full-time and build a program,” Clay said in an email to Wadsworth Community Radio.

Clay will be Mount Union’s first women’s wrestling head coach.

Wenger spent the past five years as Wadsworth High School’s boys wrestling head coach. He coached a national champion among 17 All-Americans, four state champions and 42 state qualifiers. His teams advanced to the state final four twice.

“I am excited to be in a position to grow the sport of women’s wrestling,” Wenger said in a statement. “I will work diligently and purposefully to build Mount Union women’s wrestling into a program that attracts student-athletes who want to reach their potential athletically, socially and, most importantly, academically. I can’t wait to chase championships the Mount Union way.”

Taking over the Wadsworth wrestling program will be another Wenger, Clay’s dad, Mike. Mike Wenger has been involved in wrestling at Wadsworth for 27 years. The Wadsworth School Board must approve the hiring of Mike, which is expected to take place on Nov. 20.
